Road Bike

CLASSIC DIVISION

The Road Bike leg of the course starts at Cumberland Lake Park where they take over from the kayak member of the team. This is a 25.2 km route that consists of travel on paved public roads and highways. Riders must wear their numbers on their chest and back and they must be visible at all times. A bike number will be supplied at check-in and must be affixed to all bikes. Check-in is between 9 and 11 am when there is an on-site bike and equipment safety inspection. No E-Bikes or recumbents. If you require snacks or hydration, you must bring your own as there are no refreshments on-site and it is advisable to be prepared for any kind of weather. It can be cool and quite windy at this location.

Cyclists are encouraged to leave their vehicles in Cumberland at the Cumberland Recreational Institute or Village Park and ride the 3.5 km to the road bike transition point. Comox Lake Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 11 am to 2:30 pm for safety reasons. Kayak pick-up must be after 2:30.

I-Pods, MP3, Walkman, or similar music/audio systems are not allowed to be used by the racers while competing.

Road marshalls are positioned all along the route and cyclists must observe the rules of the road. Comox Valley Snow to Surf Society also hires professional flaggers to ensure safety along the length of the route.

Once the kayaker is out of Comox Lake, the road cyclists head down Comox Lake Road to Sutton Road in Cumberland, south on Dunsmuir Avenue through the Village of Cumberland, proceed south on Royston Road to the intersection of Highway 19A. From there, the route goes farther south to Argyle Road, north on Kilmarnock Drive, west on Spindrift Road to Highway 19A. They then proceed north on Highway 19A all the way to Sandpiper Road in Courtenay.

Riders must use caution on Royston Road over the railway tracks in Royston and at the sharp right on to Highway 19A and must obey the traffic light at Hwy 19A and Royston Road or face disqualification.
